No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
