The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you ought to provide him your sweater as well.
The apparent and direct truth that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both humility and faith, a combination that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
