Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
