People who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to meet with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Global Strict Approach Advocated

The organization is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

They noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and appeared "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is advocating that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed hope for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a connection and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
