Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
